The likelihood of the Finnish border opening is increasing! 15.05.2024 01:18Finland's Constitutional Law Committee has approved a bill authorising refusal of asylum and removal of refugees from the country. The law will allow the Russian border to reopen, news agency STT reported on 14 May.
The 'Deportation Act' prepared by Finland's Ministry of the Interior provides that asylum seekers arriving from Russia will remain at the border or in special reception centres while their applications are examined. If asylum is refused, they will be swiftly deported back to Russia. This provision will apply only in the event of a serious influx of asylum seekers and will not affect applications for international protection elsewhere in Finland.
The parliamentary Constitutional Law Committee considers that the border procedures law can be passed without constitutional obstacles.
Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen previously stated that the border between Finland and Russia could reopen after the law takes effect.
