Do not try to fit the entire city into one day
- Separate walking from journeys between addresses.
- Allow time for meals, rest and returning to the meeting point.
- If you have a ferry or flight, plan around its departure.
What to see in central Helsinki
You can begin exploring the city at Senate Square and Helsinki Cathedral, then walk to Market Square by the South Harbour and Esplanadi Park. Uspenski Cathedral is a separate stop near Katajanokka. These sights can form a walking route, with drop-off and return meeting points decided in advance.
If shopping matters, allow separate time for it: Aleksanterinkatu, Stockmann department store and central shopping streets form part of a city itinerary rather than a short transfer between two addresses. For a specific purchase, check the shop’s presence in its official directory.
A family programme: islands, zoo or aquarium
Suomenlinna fortress is on islands and requires a separate water crossing; a vehicle cannot take visitors straight to the museum door. Korkeasaari Zoo and SEA LIFE aquarium also have their own entrances, tickets and calendars. With children, it is usually more convenient to choose one major attraction and leave time for food and rest.
Do not combine a museum, an island visit and several shops merely because they are in the same city. Discuss whether transport is needed only to the centre or between several attractions. A guide, tickets and the ferry part of the programme are agreed separately from the minivan.
Market Square as a landmark
Market Square is by the South Harbour and links to a walk along the waterfront and Esplanadi Park. Use specific place names when describing your preferred drop-off, and separate the walking part of the day from the driving sections.
Final destination and return journey
A hotel, private address, port and Helsinki Airport are different arrival points. Ferry connections require the terminal name and departure details; airport journeys require the flight and date. Add the return address if you leave from somewhere else.
